Has it been a while since you last visited your dentist? You may be nervous about being back in the chair after several months or even years, but getting familiar with what happens at a routine cleaning can give you more confidence! After all, your dentist will be excited that you are back. They care for you and your oral health, so they won’t judge you at all. Here is a little refresher on what you can expect when you get to your dental appointment.

Once You Get Checked In

Whether you are headed to a new dentist or a patient returning after a while, they might have you finish some paperwork beforehand. This usually includes medical and dental history, as well as any past and current health conditions. Letting your dentist know all this information can give them a better understanding of your oral health and enable them to give you the best care you deserve.

When it’s time to head back, you are walked to your treatment room. You may notice some differences already. If it’s been years since your last visit, you may hear that it’s not as loud as you remember. As dental technology advances, the tools become more efficient and quieter!

During Your Cleaning

Right before your cleaning can start, your dental hygienist may want to take some X-rays. They are recommended since they can show things hidden under the surface. The process of getting X-rays is simple and easy as well! You’ll wear a lead vest and bite down on plastic pieces that keep your teeth aligned for a clearer image.

After that, you’ll be asked about any concerns or questions you have about your oral health, and then the cleaning can commence! You may need an extended cleaning if it’s been several months since your last appointment.

Your dental hygienist will then start to professionally clean up each one of your pearly whites! They’ll floss in between your teeth, and you may start to experience some bleeding. You might be a little worried during this and feel some sensitivity, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a problem! Once that is done, your dentist will stop by and take a look at your X-rays and your newly shined teeth.

After the Visit

As the appointment finishes up, your dentist will let you know about any oral health concerns they have and create a treatment plan to fix them. They may also give you some advice on how you can better care for your oral health and answer any questions you may have. Depending on what they find, they may want to see you sooner than the regular six months! Before you head out of the dental office, be sure to schedule your next visit.

A regular cleaning doesn’t have to be stressful! You are taking the steps you need to care for your oral health, so you should pat yourself on the back for taking charge. They’ll be glad to have you back and be happy to help keep your smile pristine.
