Targeting Bacteria to Improve Gum Health

People don’t always give their gums the attention they deserve, and that can be a very costly mistake. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a leading cause of tooth loss, and it has been linked to heart attacks and several other dangerous health issues. Luckily, gum infections can be treated long before permanent damage is done. Once we’ve found signs of gum disease during your regular checkup, we can begin forming a treatment plan for fighting the infection and healing your mouth. Don’t wait to seek help. If you notice bleeding, swelling, or redness around your teeth, call us to schedule an appointment.

Scaling & Root Planing

Treating gum disease in its earliest stages is always best; however, if the bacteria spread, causing gum pockets to form, we can implement scaling and root planing. This two-part process requires that we first remove plaque and tartar from the gumline before smoothing out and reshaping the roots of affected teeth so that the gums will reattach to teeth as they heal. This approach also makes it harder for bacteria to reinfect the area.

Antibiotic Treatment

Even with the most sophisticated dental instruments, bacteria can burrow into hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. As a result, it can be difficult to remove all of it with simple scaling and root planing, which is why we oftentimes combine treatment with the use of antibiotics. We’ll administer Arestin, which is a medication that we will apply to the gum pockets so that over time, it will disperse and target remaining bacteria, effectively eliminating them.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

With the help of our diode laser, we can make treating gum disease more comfortable for all patients. When necessary, we can use this unique device to deliver greater precision when targeting the smallest areas of decay. Its concentrated beam of light only touches affected tissues, leaving all healthy areas unharmed. With minimal bleeding and swelling because of the immediate cauterization that occurs, you can expect a faster and more comfortable recovery at home.
